2. Emergency Hormonal Contraception (Morning-After Pill)
People aged 13 years and older can get the morning-after pill free from most community pharmacies. You will have a private consultation with the pharmacist, who will offer sexual-health advice.
- It is taken after unprotected sex to prevent pregnancy.
- You can take it up to five days after unprotected sex, but the sooner the better.
- It is not an abortion; it works by delaying ovulation.
- Your pharmacist will advise on additional contraception after taking it.
3. Urinary-Tract Infection (UTI) Service
Women aged 16–64 can be assessed and treated for symptoms of a UTI at most community pharmacies. Symptoms include a burning sensation when peeing and needing to pee urgently or more often.
During a private consultation, the pharmacist will assess your symptoms. Treatment is free of charge, and antibiotics may be provided if needed. If your symptoms do not improve, the pharmacist may refer you to your GP.
4. Sore Throat Service
From now until 31 August 2025, anyone aged five years and over can use this service. The pharmacist will discuss your symptoms and may perform a throat-swab test to help diagnose the cause.
Free treatment is available to relieve pain and fever. If a bacterial infection is suspected, the pharmacist will advise on treatment and may refer you to your GP.
How to Use Pharmacy First
You can use any community pharmacy offering the relevant service.
Tell the pharmacist about your condition and any medicines you are taking.
No appointment is needed. Consultations take place in a private area.
Receive free treatment or medicines on the spot, or be referred to your GP if your condition is more serious.
Self-Care & Your Home Medicine Cabinet
Minor conditions often improve on their own. It's a good idea to keep a selection of over-the-counter items at home, such as:
- Paracetamol or ibuprofen for pain/fever
- Rehydration salts for stomach upsets
- Antihistamines for allergies
- Indigestion remedies
Your community pharmacist can advise what to include and how to use these medicines safely.
